Kids riding helmets

Why wear a riding helmet from a young age?

An essential habit for a child’s safety

Wearing a helmet is mandatory at most riding schools and centres, and — more importantly — it’s a safety habit to establish from the very first lessons. A riding helmet should be part of the basic kit alongside a body protector, safety stirrups and, where appropriate, a horse riding airbag.

Even on quiet hacks or led rides, a fall can happen suddenly, even at walk. A properly fitted children’s riding helmet absorbs and spreads impact, greatly reducing the risk of serious brain injury — much like a bicycle or ski helmet does.

Preventing injury and impact

A child’s head is particularly vulnerable. A simple loss of balance, a refusal at a fence or an unexpected movement from the horse can result in a heavy blow against the ground, a rail or a branch. Children also lack the experience and reflexes to avoid being struck by a horse’s legs.

The helmet acts as a protective barrier for the skull and plays a crucial role in preventing head trauma. Its energy-absorbing structure reduces impact forces and protects the child even in unforeseen situations.

What safety standards should a child’s helmet meet?

Current standards and regulation

Every children’s riding helmet sold by Vestride meets the current standards in force. Certified, compliant helmets have passed rigorous impact tests and provide reliable protection in the event of an accident. Always choose a model with clear certification.

Quality materials

A good helmet combines a hard outer shell — typically ABS or carbon on premium models — with an inner energy-absorbing foam liner. These materials absorb shock while keeping the helmet light and comfortable to wear.

How to choose the right helmet size

Head circumference and a precise fit

Size is crucial. Measure the child’s head with a tape measure, just above the eyebrows, to choose the correct size. That measurement will guide you to the appropriate model, whether adjustable or fixed-size.

Adjustable helmets with a dial

Adjustable helmets are ideal for growing children. A rear dial lets you fine-tune the fit so the helmet sits securely without slipping or causing discomfort during lessons. It’s a practical investment for parents who want durable gear that maintains optimal support.

Which helmet is best to start riding?

Models designed for beginners

A beginner’s riding helmet should be lightweight and comfortable. At Vestride we recommend the best options for your child’s age, experience and budget, balancing safety, style and functionality.

With a rear adjustment dial, an adjustable chinstrap and a lightweight shell, a children’s helmet offers the right balance of protection and comfort so young riders can focus on learning without distraction.

• Helmets with a rear dial for a lasting fit
• Bright or understated styles to suit every taste
• Ventilated shells for effective airflow
• Removable, washable liners for comfort and hygiene

Designs children love

From sparkly pink helmets to ones with printed motifs, fun designs encourage kids to wear their helmet with enthusiasm. Many of the brands we offer — including Casco and Kep — combine playful styling with full compliance.

When should you replace a riding helmet?

Lifespan and general condition

Replace a helmet after any fall, even if no crack is visible — the internal structure may be compromised. In general, we recommend replacing helmets every three to five years, depending on usage and care.

Care and storage

Store the helmet in a helmet bag to protect it from knocks, dust and moisture. Clean the liners regularly with a suitable spray or remove them for machine washing if the model allows, and check the chinstrap and fittings for wear.

How to fit your child’s riding helmet

A correct fit is key to safety

The helmet should be snug without pinching and stay in place during movement. The chinstrap should sit beneath the chin and be tightened enough to hold the helmet securely without restricting breathing or vision.

Checkpoints to verify

• The rear adjustment dial provides stable support
• The ears must not be pinched
• The helmet should not rock forward or backward
• The child should feel no pressure points

What materials are used in a child’s riding helmet?

Lightweight and durable

Children’s helmets are commonly made from high-density plastic or carbon for higher-end models. The priority is to combine lightness, strength and comfort. Many helmets feature ventilation channels and breathable foams to avoid discomfort during longer sessions.

Mistakes to avoid when buying a child’s riding helmet

Ignoring safety standards

Choosing an uncertified or non-compliant helmet is a common mistake. Even for occasional use, equip your child with a helmet that meets current standards. Always check for a conformity mark on the label or packaging.

Picking a size at random

A helmet must fit the child’s head precisely. A too-large or poorly fitting helmet won’t protect effectively. Prefer models with a rear dial or precise internal adjustment — especially if the child is still growing quickly.

Overlooking the helmet’s condition

Do not buy a helmet that has been used extensively, is damaged or has been in a fall. Even if it looks intact, its ability to absorb shock may be reduced. We strongly advise against buying second‑hand riding helmets.

Is a riding helmet suitable for other sports?

Different sports, different helmets

Although they may look similar, bicycle and ski helmets are not engineered for riding. The shape, structure and impact resistance of equestrian helmets are designed for risks specific to horse falls. Use equipment dedicated to each discipline.

Multi-sport helmets: check the certification

If you’re considering a multi-use helmet, make sure it’s certified for equestrian use. A multi-sport label does not automatically replace a helmet designed specifically for horse riding.
