Airbag body protector

How does a riding airbag shell work?

An innovative hybrid safety system

The riding airbag shell uses a fast mechanical trigger. Attached to the saddle by a lanyard, the shell contains a CO2 cartridge that activates the moment a rider is unseated. In milliseconds the airbag inflates and the rigid shell spreads the impact, reducing serious injury to vulnerable parts of the body. This system is especially recommended for technical phases such as cross-country, where impacts are powerful and obstacles fixed.

Protection in a fall

Unlike a conventional body protector, an airbag shell adds significant protection for lateral, frontal and rear impacts. Its rapid inflation absorbs the force of the fall and shields the rider. It’s a key advantage for disciplines that demand commitment, while providing excellent protection from the early stages of riding.

Why choose an airbag shell rather than a standard vest?

More complete, reinforced protection

An airbag vest is a very effective piece of protection. In some situations, however, an airbag shell may be better suited. It delivers greater spinal rigidity without compromising comfort thanks to a lightweight design and breathable materials. Combining airbag technology with a hard structure, this hybrid model blends lightness, ergonomics and top-level protection for adult riders.

A strategic choice for committed riders

Intermediate and advanced eventing or cross-country riders often look for equipment that soaks up the most violent impacts. A complete airbag shell provides high-level protection for the torso and back while remaining compatible with technical riding jackets, competition outfits and other kit such as safety stirrups.

Which airbag vests with shell are the best?

At Vestride we’ve selected the top horse riding airbag vests with a shell to meet the demands of the most exacting riders. The X’Air Safe shell from Freejump is a benchmark: it delivers eight times the protection of a cross-country body protector alone and four times the protection of a cross-country protector worn with an airbag over it. The X’Air Safe is made from premium technical materials.

Are there models suitable for children?

Children’s riding protection: a major concern

At Vestride we believe young riders deserve the same high safety standards as adults. That’s why we offer children’s airbag vests and shells sized for their proportions. Lighter and more flexible, these models ensure comfortable wear while providing optimal coverage. A children’s airbag shell lets younger riders participate from the early stages—in clubs or out on the open—to the highest possible safety standard.
