Riding helmet without visor

Designed primarily for cross-country riding and high-intensity disciplines, the visorless riding helmet meets very specific technical demands: stability at speed, minimal wind resistance, and controlled impact performance. Favoured by event riders and cross-country competitors, its streamlined profile is not a stylistic choice, but a functional response to the challenges of terrain, pace, and physical effort. At Vestride, we have selected high-performance visorless helmets, mainly from established brands such as NACA, and can also guide you towards alternative models on request, according to your discipline and individual requirements.

In cross-country, the rider competes at high speed over natural terrain and fixed obstacles. A visorless helmet reduces wind resistance, provides greater stability, and minimizes the risks associated with a rigid visor in the event of a frontal or rotational impact. For these reasons, it is widely favored in eventing, particularly during the cross-country phase.

It is not inherently “safer,” but rather better suited to certain disciplines. In cross-country, the absence of a rigid visor allows the helmet to react more uniformly on impact and limits leverage effects on the rider’s cervical spine. Above all, the helmet must be certified and precisely fitted to the rider’s head.

Yes. NACA helmets can be fitted with interchangeable magnetic visors, making them ideal for use in disciplines other than cross-country. Alternatively, visorless helmets can also be worn with a helmet cover, which may incorporate a soft fabric visor.

The choice should be based on several criteria: personal preference, riding frequency, head shape, ventilation, and helmet weight. A precise fit is essential—the helmet must remain stable without creating pressure points. At Vestride, we support you in making this choice and can, on request, offer a range of models and brands tailored to your specific needs.

Why choose a visorless riding helmet?

The visorless helmet — often called a "toque" in cross-country and racing circles — features a sleek, aerodynamic profile. Unlike traditional arena helmets, this style is engineered for disciplines where speed and fixed obstacles raise the risk of rotational or forward impacts. A rigid visor can act like a lever on the neck or cause facial injuries in a frontal hit, so removing it is a key safety choice.

This helmet is particularly suited to eventing for the cross-country phase. Cross riders need an unobstructed field of vision and kit that won't catch on the ground or on branches. Many models are designed to be used with a toque cover, allowing custom colours or a soft fabric peak that will give way without resistance in a crash.

The NACA benchmark: technical performance and comfort

NACA is known for its interchangeable visor system. That modular approach lets riders adapt a helmet to each discipline or condition. NACA’s visorless designs are a natural extension of that technical, performance-led philosophy:

Option to ride without a visor — highly prized in cross-country.
Aeronautical-inspired shapes that favour aerodynamics and airflow.
Lightweight, well-balanced helmets built for committed riders.
Understated, functional styling aligned with cross-country demands.

NACA targets riders who want a versatile helmet that performs across uses — and cross-country is one of the most demanding.

Other visorless helmets to suit each rider

While NACA is a key name in our range, other visorless equestrian helmet brands such as Kep or GPA are available on request. Riders have different needs (discipline, head shape, riding frequency, sensitivity to weight or ventilation), so we sometimes steer customers to a specific model.

Safety standards and certification

Visorless helmets for cross-country are engineered with a highly technical approach:

Optimised ventilation to prevent overheating during intense efforts.
Materials that absorb impact effectively and meet current safety standards.
Precise fit systems to keep the helmet secure even on demanding courses.

These helmets also work well for other outdoor or training disciplines (TREC, hacking, schooling), but their advantages are most apparent on cross-country. Many helmets are designed to be compatible with airbag systems, pairing with a lanyard or tether and a CO2 cartridge or canister when required.

At Vestride we never compromise on safety. Every helmet shown on the site is fully certified. They undergo extensive testing that simulates impacts from multiple angles and checks the strength of the chinstrap and fastening. The buckle — often a quick-release clip — must stay secure under load but remain easy for the rider to operate. Whether moulded in ABS or composite fibres, the shell is designed to deform or fracture in a controlled way to absorb energy and protect the brain.

How to choose the right size and model

Size matters. A helmet that’s too large and moves around won’t protect properly. Measure your head with a tape measure, placing it across the middle of the forehead to find your circumference. Many models feature interchangeable pads so you can fine-tune the fit to the nearest centimetre.

Order your chosen helmet from Vestride, receive it quickly, and take the time to check that it doesn’t press on the forehead and stays put when you move your head. If you’re undecided between a helmet with a large visor and a visorless model for cross-country, remember each discipline has its own rules and safety priorities.
