Stainless steel has been widely used in the manufacture of riding stirrups for many years. Strong and durable, it generally results in a stirrup with a certain amount of weight. Some riders appreciate this presence underfoot and the ease with which they can find the stirrup again if they momentarily lose it.

Aluminium, on the other hand, reduces weight while maintaining a strong metal structure. It is now widely used for technical and safety stirrups, particularly because it allows manufacturers to create more complex shapes, wide or angled treads and different opening mechanisms.

Does stirrup weight influence how they feel to the rider?

Weight is one of the most noticeable differences between two pairs of stirrups. A heavier stirrup has more presence at the end of the stirrup leather, which can make it easier to recover if the rider loses it. Some riders also appreciate this feeling of stability.

Conversely, a lightweight metal stirrup, often made from aluminium, provides a different feel and may be preferred by riders who want to reduce the weight of their equipment. Weight preferences are very personal.
