Why choose a specific body protector for cross-country?

Cross-country, whether in Eventing (CCE) or in training, is a very different discipline. Unlike showjumping, where rails can fall, cross-country uses fixed obstacles. A fall onto one of these features can cause severe impact injuries. A cross-country body protector is therefore designed to offer higher protection for the chest, back and vital organs, absorbing impact energy to prevent or reduce injury. The foam used — whether soft or made of articulated panels — is tested to withstand high-energy impacts. Wearing a back-only protector or a garment not designed for cross-country is not enough for the risks involved.

Competition rules for Eventing are strict and generally require a body protector that meets a specific European standard. Choosing a certified model is essential. Understanding standards and protection levels

When you buy a body protector for riding — and especially for cross-country — the level of protection is the key factor. Not all protectors offer the same level of defence. The European standard EN 13158 is the benchmark for protective garments against mechanical impact in equestrian sports. The standard divides protectors into three levels.

Level 1: Minimal protection

This is the lowest protection class, intended for situations with very low risk — not typical of cross-country. A level 1 back protector covers the spine but provides limited coverage overall. These items are not permitted in cross-country competition.

Level 2: Intermediate protection

Level 2 protectors provide standard protection for leisure riding or lower-risk disciplines. They are usually softer and lighter. For cross-country, level 2 is often considered insufficient, although some low-level amateur events may permit it. Always check the event rules.

Level 3: Superior protection (the cross-country standard)

Level 3 is the requirement for higher levels of cross-country competition and is strongly recommended for all Eventing. A Level 3 body protector offers the most comprehensive protection, covering the spine, back and ribcage and guarding against high-energy impacts. These protectors are tested for severe impacts. Your body protector should display a CE and EN 13158 Level 3 certification label — the clearest sign of maximum protection.

The different types of body protectors for cross-country

Traditional articulated protector (foam)

The classic cross-country body protector uses high-density foam blocks, often articulated. Many well-known ranges use this construction. The advantage of this design is reliable, proven Level 3 performance. Articulated protectors mould to the body while allowing good freedom of movement. They’re robust and typically more affordable. The horse riding airbag: technological protection

The horse riding airbag has been transforming rider safety for several years. It works like this: the airbag is attached to the saddle with a lanyard. If you fall, the lanyard releases, triggers a cartridge and the airbag inflates in a fraction of a second, protecting vital areas before you hit the ground. The airbag offers outstanding protection for the spine, neck and chest. Note: for cross-country, rules often require the airbag to be worn over a rigid body protector (a shell). The airbag alone is a complementary system, not a substitute. Check compatibility and keep a spare cartridge to hand.

Hybrid protectors

How to choose and fit your cross-country body protector

A protector’s effectiveness depends entirely on fit. A poorly fitting body protector can’t protect properly and may even become dangerous or restrict your movement in the saddle. Cross-country protectors should fit close to the body.

Taking measurements: the key to a good fit

To choose the right size measure three points: chest circumference, waist circumference and back length (from the base of the neck to the tailbone). Each brand and model has its own sizing guide — consult the product page before adding to your basket. A protector should be worn close to the body, over a thin layer (a T‑shirt or competition polo), not over a thick jacket.

Adjusting the cross-country protector

Cross-country protectors usually offer several adjustment points. Fastenings (often Velcro at the shoulders and sides) allow precise tuning. The garment should neither float nor compress you. The front must cover the ribcage and the lower edge should not catch on the saddle when you’re in riding position. The back must protect the whole spine. A well-adjusted protector is one you forget about while you ride.

Child’s protector

Children’s safety is a priority. A child’s cross-country protector should be chosen with the same care as an adult model, from purpose-built youth ranges.
